Last September, Get Smokin won one of Kentucky's richest turf races. Saturday, he landed one of America's most revered.
Making all the pace once again, the 7yo veteran pulled off a dramatic score in Saturday's Gr2 United Nations at Monmouth Park. Thriving of late over routes that once appeared beyond his scope, the Hurstland Farm graduate out of Hookah Lady held firm to prevail by a nose over Grand Sonata.
Winner's share of the $624,000 U.N. purse lifted Get Smokin's career earnings over $2 million. The Get Stormy gelding is a GSW in four of the past five seasons, all since being acquired for $11,000 by his sire's breeder Mary Sullivan at Fasig-Tipton 2018 October Yearling Sale.
Back under Fernando de la Cruz, the Mark Casse trainee set an honest pace throughout the 11 furlong U.N. Still clear at the sixteenth pole, Get Smokin looked likely to be passed by one of two challengers late but managed to just hold off Grand Sonata's inside rally. Tawny Port stayed on a close 3rd.
Hookah Lady is also dam of Smoldering Ash, 2yo full-sister to Get Smokin in training with Kelsey Danner. The Smoke Glacken mare, owned by Hurstland in partnership with Jim Greene, foaled a Practical Joke filly this past season.
