Preakness Friday at Pimlico Race Course, featuring the historic Black-Eyed Susan S., recalls the success of a breeder well-known for his 'other' career.

For many, David Cassidy will be remembered first for his part in pop culture history. The Partridge Family star also fashioned, with decidedly less fanfare, a notably legacy through his NY-based breeding operation.

The Desert Wine mare Sand Pirate provided Cassidy with both the canvas to produce his finest breeding achievement & most memorable moment as owner. Sweet Vendetta (Stephen Got Even), owned in partnership with co-breeder David Lipton, was a stakes winner in NY before shipping to Pimlico and annexing the 2008 Black-Eyed Susan.

Another daughter of Sand Pirate, Love Cove, was a dual stakes winner later that year for Brant Laue, who purchased her for $75,000 at Fasig-Tipton Saratoga's Preferred Yearling Sale.

The Not for Love mare has resided at Hurstland Farm throughout her broodmare career & is dam of 2022 Hilltop S. runner-up Diamond Hands (Frosted), also run on Preakness week.

From matings to a clever array of sires, Sand Pirate produced eight winners total, including MSW Half Heaven (Regal Classic).
