For Destino d'Oro owner Steve Landers, the next move is to simply wait.
His budding 2yo star out of Gr1-placed Heart of Destiny will be in line for many lucrative races in the year ahead. The immediate goal for Landers and trainer Brad Cox however is the Gr1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf, run Nov. 1st at Del Mar.
“I’m anxious to get a shot,” said Landers. “I think she’s special.”
The Bolt d'Oro filly earned nothing but plaudits for her bold closing finish after a less-than-ideal trip in the Gr2 Jessamine S. A 3rd place finish to May Day Ready and Totally Justified in just her 2nd career start left the Hurstland Farm graduate inches shy of an automatic berth in the $1 million Juvenile Fillies Turf.
The late-running style Destino d'Oro displayed debuting at Kentucky Downs figured to present challenges in a crowded Jessamine field, and it did. Despite being taken up in tight quarters soon after the start, then rallying widest into the stretch, Destino d'Oro just missed winning the three-way photo.
Last year, the Juvenile Fillies Turf drew 25 pre-entries. A committee selects the first 14 plus also-eligibles in an order of preference. Landers is eager to see his filly among those selected, which will be announced Oct. 21st.
Destino d'Oro is the last foal to race for Heart of Destiny (Lion Heart), 2nd in the 2011 Gr1 Alcibiades S. and dam of four winners. Landers' filly, a $185,000 OBS purchase, is her first black-type earner.
"She’s green; she’s still young," added Landers. "We’ve got a shot if we can get her in.”
